TELECOMMS

We all need telecomms - from telephones through broadband connections to website hosting. Here you will find some great value providers THAT WE ACTUALLY USE OURSELVES! In some cases you will find codes that will get you something extra when you sign up - it all helps. .

BROADBAND/LANDLINE

Super low cost domestic or business grade (same performance but a higher level of support if needed) we have one of each type installed.

MOBILE PHONE

Fancy 1p/minute calls, 1p/text and 1p/Mb data? You may find it costs less than a contract - it certainly does for us!

WEB HOSTING & EMAIL

Again we use more than one supplier so can compare the strengths and weaknesses (and pricing).

VPN

Protect yourself when travelling (and access your normal TV and Radio sources) with this cost-effective service

PHILOSOPHY

Where appropriate we will have used, or still use, the products and services on these pages, so you can be sure that they work!
In some cases, if you click through and buy something, we may receive a small commission.
In some other cases we BOTH get a bonus on signup: win/win.

Broadband

The suppliers we use and what we found:

BROADBAND

Our "domestic" service

It works and works well. The supplied modem/router was simple to set up and performs great. WiFi signal seems strong.
VERY good value and the price INCLUDES phone line rental (you can transfer your old number easily and free). Call costs are very low too and if you are a heavy user there are bundles available.
We have not needed to test the quality of their support as nothing has gone wrong. They do come out better than all the majors on Trustpilot though.
We are on the "up to 38 Mb/s" service and usually get at least 36 Mb/s out here in the real world. The higher speed option is just £5/month more.

Plusnet

Business

Our "business" service

Info

Offer

You've all seen the ads for their domestic offer, but Plusnet also do "business broadband" for very little extra. Again line rental is included in the prices shown.
We did need to contact support: The line went down completely due to (as it turned out) a fault in the phone line between the cabinet and the building. They were reasonably helpful in getting things fixed.
The supplied modem/router is not so good. We had issues with it dropping the data connection for a minute or two now and again. Searching online finds others who have reported similar things. Since switching to my own nice Asus modem/router we have noticed no problems (and better WiFi signal).

Hosting & EMAIL

Two providers we use now. One happens to be headquartered locally, the other is a very big player.

Ionos

IONOS positions itself as the hosting and cloud partner of choice for small and medium-sized businesses.  As the largest hosting company in Europe, they manage more than 8 million customer contracts and host more than 12 million domains in their regional data centres around the globe.

Mythic Beasts

Mythic Beasts is a privately owned hosting ISP with a focus on providing services to technically capable customers. Started in 2000 by a group of Oxford and Cambridge University graduates who were dissatisfied customers of other shared hosting providers

VPN  -  Virtual Private Network

Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for business travel offers several benefits, helping to enhance security, privacy, and productivity while you're on the road. Here are some key advantages:

Enhanced Security: VPNs encrypt your internet connection, making it much more difficult for hackers and cybercriminals to intercept and steal your sensitive data. This is crucial when using public Wi-Fi networks at airports, hotels, cafes, or conference venues, which are often less secure.

Data Privacy: A VPN can protect your company's sensitive information, such as proprietary data, customer records, and trade secrets, from prying eyes. It prevents ISPs and other entities from monitoring your online activities and potentially selling that data.

Access to Restricted Content: VPNs allow you to access geo-restricted content, such as region-locked websites and streaming services, even when you're in a different country. This can be helpful for business travelers who need to access specific online resources or entertainment.

Bypassing Censorship: In some countries, internet censorship and restrictions may impede your ability to access certain websites or communication tools. A VPN can help you bypass these restrictions and access the internet more freely.

Secure Remote Access: If your business relies on remote access to corporate networks and resources, a VPN can provide a secure and encrypted connection, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected during transmission.

Anonymous Browsing: VPNs hide your IP address and location, making it more challenging for websites and advertisers to track your online activities. This can enhance your privacy while browsing the web.

Preventing Data Leakage: VPNs can help prevent accidental data leakage by providing a secure tunnel for data transmission. This is important when transferring sensitive files or communicating with clients and colleagues.

Cost Savings: Some VPN services offer the ability to change your virtual location to appear as if you're in your home country. This can help you avoid international roaming charges on your mobile devices.

Improved Performance: In some cases, a VPN can actually improve your internet connection's performance by circumventing ISP throttling or congestion issues.

Compliance: For businesses operating in regulated industries, using a VPN may be a requirement to comply with data protection and privacy regulations. It helps demonstrate that the company is taking steps to secure sensitive information.

Business Continuity: VPNs can play a role in your business continuity planning. If your primary office experiences a disruption, employees can connect to your network securely from remote locations via the VPN.

Client Trust: Clients and partners may have greater trust in your company's commitment to data security when they know you use a VPN to protect their data during communication and collaboration.

When selecting a VPN service for business travel, it's essential to choose a reputable provider with strong encryption, a no-logs policy, and servers in locations relevant to your travel destinations. Additionally, educate your employees on the importance of VPN usage and security best practices while traveling for business.

Surfshark VPN, brought to you by the same organisation that advertises another VPN brand heavily on TV, has some VERY attractive pricing, especially if you are happy to commit to a 24 month period.

They also offer an Anti-Virus service and a personal data removal service. Get further details and current pricing here (AV) and here (PDR)
